If you define knowledge in information systems and building dashboards as the ability to download a software and make a dashboard and give it a good trial, everyone is an expert and lucky for you they are willing to tailor their entire resume to give you a good run for your budget. With all development, we need a starting place, maybe that’s where you’re at and I understand. I’ve been hustling for a long time too. It was not easy to just get in college and make it through, it was a struggle. A lot of professors are selling their book to us and it feels strange they are allowed to generate this funnel for themselves. Doesn’t it seem a little strange? Good for you though, I’m doing the same by writing blogs.

Functional results are like notes you take on paper, they offer functional results, similar to writing with a marker vs pencil.

Functional results is written hand on figma to show how you can have a functional results text image VS showing the TEXT font later down the line

Functional results, like using PAINT vs FIGMA or FONTS vs Drawing it digitally.

In one mode, you can’t erase, the other, the mistakes are obvious. However if you don’t understand the marker is being used on your database, or in your tableau, how will you understand the difference of stunning functional results VS perfectly tuned results and w/ the stunning visual. Stunning in information systems is not only visual design my friend, also being able to develop things that are beyond functional results offers stunning code in generally quite impossible ways once you start to come to terms with what’s being created from scratch. Going to college gave me the chance to be the person I am today, to be able to say I’m now asked to make something from scratch and also I’m hired to push things beyond functional results. When I say SQL experience, it’s because I’ve actually installed a database, broke it, fixed it, and broke it again. Not just because I’ve clicked buttons in someone else’s SQL, no no. I’ve optimized peoples SQL, and even explained to them the writing of said SQL is actually diminishing solutions due to your engineers.

text font showing the words "functional results" showing now a version of this text that isn't drawn digitally and terrible looking

A text version of functional results. Now, doesn’t this look better? Optimized? Maybe optimization should be the definition of this poor analogy.

Working with someone with a “relative bachelors degree” offers less functional results, more bullet proof solutions, less support and remediation, and yes it will cost you more, however if you want functional results and dealing with functional results as data sizes increase, then please yes, go and hire someone who understands how to give you stunning, yet functional, results… Results non-the-less.

However I was not raised to give “50%” of my efforts, and i was told going to college would make me a more functional adult. It was right, sure I’m in debt, however I’m now able to earn more than I was in college annually, in 2 weeks.

I went to college for information systems, I see it placed me in a different kind of perspective professionally speaking, one that can not be gained by simply downloading a software or buying a textbook, and I do both. I feel I understand things in information technology, very differently. When I’m offering tableau consulting services, I’m consistently confronted with functional results and offering better alternatives in the same product or code.

Although most don’t talk to me for my skills in my university days, it’s supposedly a given at this point in life however as I look back on all the tableau consulting engagements, I’m seeing patterns that usually entail the art of SQL is not just a textbook but more so a way of being consistent when developing analytics/reports. When it’s a given and not common spoken language, it’s due to the fact that it’s not completely understood. That’s why I revisit college text books, it’s because for the life of me I will not remember a couple of random key words, however I’m familiar, I know that word, and I study it a little bit each month VS annually.

Having not gained a masters or PhD is also a different perspective. I study old college text books for many years now, having built goodwills data warehouse, I am attracted to finding random university text books at Goodwill for dollars, and yes… finding inspiration on nearly every page, yet during college it was more about “some exam.”

The more I read these text books, the more I understand the competitive advantage I offer. Also I wonder, should i return now.

It’s why I consistently see google ads for 3x less than I charge per hour, there is room for functional results in information systems.

Functional results is like an excel spreadsheet, it works right now. Then in the future volumes of data change, things break.

Functional results is likely not what I’m going to be able to provide for anyone anymore and it’s not due to going to university, it’s due to caring an insane amount about my development and where I put my time.

If you’re going to dedicate yourself to an art, you really can’t stop at functional results, and SQL is no different than being good at guitar and wanting to tour the world. I too want to make music around the world, however writing SQL that is then used by people around the world will do just fine too.
